Film screening: Revelstoke mountaineers guide young Afghan women on empowerment expedition for HBO VICE doc

Two Revelstoke guides will present a film about an empowering all-female expedition with Afgan girls into the Panshir mountains in Afghanistan.

Revelstoke mountain guides Emelie Sternberg and Cecelia Mortenson will present a screening of the highly inspirations VICE  documentary Ascending Aghanistan on Dec. 15.

Check out our interview with Emelie Sternberg and Cecelia Mortenson here.

The film features an expedition of young Afghan women from Kabul as they learn to challenge the rugged mountains of the Panshir Valley in Afghanistan.

The two local guides provided guiding support to the young women and film crew on the expedition into the mountains.

This is a story of overcoming huge barriers, both physical and cultural, in a country where women’s rights rank near the very bottom compared to other countries.

Follow the mountaineers and their students as they venture into the rugged and beautiful mountain landscape — a first for an all female Afghan team.

After the screening, there will be a chance to talk to one of the Afghan girls about the impact the expedition had on her life.

The girls are supported by Ascend, an American non-profit whose mission is to prepare an all-female, all-Afghan team to climb Afghanistan’s highest mountain.

The screening is on Friday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and sold at Valhalla Pure or sold online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ascending-afghanistan-rising-women-tickets-41130068141?aff=es2
